What is IK10 cover glass

IK code, IK ratings or IK impact protection all refer to the same mechanical impact protection rating.
IK rating is defined as IK and a number from 0 to 10, where the number represents the different levels of testing. The impact capacity of the IK10 test is 20J. There are also requirements for the shape, weight and drop height of the impact hammer.a cover glass that can pass the IK 10 test can become an IK 10 cover glass.

So how does a fragile display screen cope with such a strong impact? Without any special design, the IK test will be fatal to lcd display.

We can pass the IK test by using specially designed cover glass. Fengxiao Technology has rich experience in passing the IK test and has provided products for many customers, which are widely used in transportation centers, highways, prisons, schools, hospitals, etc. Our suppliers include: Corning , Asahi , Nippon Electric Glass and Sichuan Xuhong, CSG, Kibing Group, China National Building Materials, etc. The excellent products of Chinese glass manufacturers such as CSG KK6 and Xuhong Panda 1681 have reached the level of Corning GG5 and GG6.

According to our experience, a single layer of 2mm Corning cover glass is sufficient to pass the test of IK 8 and below, but to pass IK 8 or even IK 10, thickened physically strengthened glass is required.

The difference between chemically strengthened and physically strengthened glass for IK 10 cover glass

Chemically strengthened glass is a glass substrate that is placed in molten salt. Smaller metal ions in the glass are exchanged with larger metal ions in the molten salt, forming a pressure layer near the surface of the glass. The pressure layer can inhibit the expansion of cracks, thereby strengthening the glass. Chemical strengthening is not suitable for thick glass. For example, the most famous Corning Gorilla series has a maximum thickness of 2mm. The surface hardness after chemical strengthening is Mohs hardness 7.

When the cover glass is further enlarged, the effect of chemical strengthening will become worse, and physical strengthening is required. Physical strengthening is to heat the glass and then quickly cool the surface, which will generate stress on the surface, thereby strengthening the performance of the glass. Compared with chemically strengthened glass, physically strengthened glass has no limit on thickness, but the surface flatness of physically strengthened glass after alternating hot and cold is not as good as that of chemically strengthened glass, so it is not suitable for surface treatment. The surface hardness after physical strengthening is Mohs hardness 6.

Recommendations for IK 10 cover glass

 

For IK test, the design of single-layer thick cover is better than the design of double-layer cover with OCA bonding. For example, in order to pass IK 10 test, the chance of passing IK 10 test by using 3MM+2.8MM+0.2MM OCA cover lens is very low. Because the first layer of cover glass will be broken during the test. However, using a single layer of 6MM cover lens can pass the test smoothly, because the 6MM cover lens can provide sufficient strength.
